An Overview Of Leadership

I have worked with business CEO’s and their Executive Teams for over 30 years.

During this time, I have come to believe in the benefit of commercial endeavour and the significance of leadership as a key driver of future value.

While each context is unique, I have seen many common leadership threads particularly in terms of what works. These thoughts are an attempt to capture those insights. They are not a universal model of leadership; no such thing exists or ever will.  The joy and challenge of leadership is to find out what works best in your own unique context.

I refer to ‘great’ many times. This is deliberate. Great leaders exist. They are not some magical mix of Oprah Winfrey and Jeff Bezos. They are leaders whose leadership works in their context, which is ultimately demonstrated by the value they create. Thinking about what great means is an essential part of being an effective leader.

These resources are my best description of what great leadership looks like. I hope they inform your leadership, provoke your thinking and encourage your action.

Leaders exist to create value.

Great leaders do this by:

  • Creating purpose.

  • Delivering performance.

  • Enabling the future.

They focus on:

Owning The Narrative – shaping the context that stakeholders respond to.

  • Creating the story.

  • Telling the story.

  • Being the story.

Driving Performance – enabling delivery which makes a difference.

  • Defining performance.

  • Measuring performance.

  • Provoking performance.

Investing In Themselves – leveraging their individual contribution.

  • Shaping the life they want.

  • Leveraging their leadership role.

  • Sustaining energy.

Building The Leadership Ecosystem – developing an infrastructure which enables great leadership.

These roles overlap, which requires the leader to always wear multiple hats.
